Middle School Student Checklist
  • Get off to a good start! Study hard, develop strong study habits and turn in all assignments.
  • Read, read, read!
  • Start thinking about which classes will best prepare you for high school.
  • Take Algebra I, if at all possible.
  • Get involved in extracurricular activities.
  • Volunteer. It is a wonderful way to give back to your community, meet new people, learn new things, and explore careers.
  • Start thinking about what you want to do when you grow up.
  • Get to know your teachers and guidance counselors.
  • Get involved with the Legacy Scholar program.
  • Develop, with your counselor, a four-year plan for high school.
  • Find a mentor, someone you want to be like. It could be a teacher, family member, family friend, or any other positive person you feel could guide you and have a positive influence on your life.
  • Be your own person. Be a leader, but remember that in being a leader you have to be a follower at times in order to learn.
  • Visit the high school you are planning to attend, shadow a high school student.
  • Take challenging courses in middle school to prepare you for high school.
  • Don’t be too shy to ask questions, and then make sure to ask them of dependable sources.
  • Apply for a social security number if you do not have one.
  • Attend, with your parent, any financial planning or “how to afford college” programs offered at your school or in the community.
