Why College FAQs

Why is college important to young people?

Below are national statistics that also apply to Battle Creek:

Earning potential
2002: Male and female college graduates earn 65% and 71% more, respectively, than high school graduates without a college degree (in 1980 that number was only 19% higher for males and 34% for females).

Employment
2003: There is a 44% unemployment rate among youth (ages 16-24) currently not attending high school, or without a high-school diploma (compared to 9% achieving at least a bachelor’s degree).

Health
78% of those with a bachelor’s degree reported being in excellent health (66% of those with some education beyond high school; 56%, high school education; and 39%, less than a high school education).

Educational access
54% of recent high school graduates from low-income families pursue post-secondary education, compared to 88% of upper-income graduates.

Why should I go to college?
That is a good question with lots of answers. For some, getting a college education is about making more money over the average career. But there is more to an education than just money. It’s also about having a stimulating and interesting career. It’s about expanding horizons and exposing yourself to new experiences. And it’s about making the most of the opportunities you have. The bottom line – a college education allows you to explore all the choices waiting for you!

What if I can't afford college?
It’s natural to look at the total cost of college and think that there is no way you can afford it. But there is lots of help from Michigan and the federal government for all students. Some of the money, like the Legacy Scholarship for qualifying students, is a gift. You might also need to take out some loans. But you can bet it will be worth it in the long run!

What kinds of resources are available?
There are lots of resources to help you get ready for college. The first is your guidance counselor – make a great relationship with him or her so you get good advice about how to get ready for college. The Legacy Scholars program and this website is a great resource for more ideas. Check out the websites of a few of your favorite colleges and talk with their admissions staff to find out more about them specifically.

What's the next step?

Take a look at what you are doing now – in middle, and high school. Make sure you are ready for the opportunities that are available to you through a college education.
